Boat engine cooling diagram
On inboard/outboard boats the water is pumped in through ports on the sterndrive using a pump located in the lower unit. Attachment 1057 From the sterndrive water pump the water may pass through a
transmission cooler on its way to the oil cooler. Attachment 1058 On most engines when the water leaves the oil cooler is where the differences begin. In the old days, many marine engine cooling systems were of the “raw-water” variety, meaning simply that they relied on pumping whatever water the boat was floating in through the engine and pumping it out the exhaust system—salt water, polluted water, algae-infested water, whatever was available. The Heat ExchangerThe Expansion TankThe Half System (Engine Block Only)The Full System (Engine Block and Exhaust Manifolds)The heat exchanger is the heart of the closed cooling system. It uses raw lake or ocean water brought in from the raw water pump to act as coolant for the engines circulating water. The circulating water runs in a closed loop through the
engine only in a half system and in a full system, the exhaust manifold as well. The heat exchanger acts as a radiator does in an automobile, however rather than air the raw water is used for cooling the circulating water. The raw water is brought in an pumpeSee more on cpperformance.com A typical raw water cooling system for a marine engine conversion. A typical raw water cooling system circulation diagram. Can you post a picture that shows the thermostat housing? That will help ID a suitable cooling system diagram. It appears that you have a FULL cooling system, the manifolds are cooled by antifreeze and only the risers cooled by raw water. The cooling system of a marine engine is armed with an electronic audio alert device simply called a "warning horn".
If you hear a shrill high pitch sound coming from under the dash, or from the throttle box while under power, heed the warning, and do not continue operation of motor. Sep 04, 2009 · I am looking to fully understand the cooling system from intake to sea water pump to engine pump to exhaust. Does any one know of a complete diagram of this system? I have the service manual but it does not give a full diagram of this system, only bits and pieces. With jet boats, there exists a number of problems with the factory cooling system design that have come to light over the years. First, most jet boat engines run too cool for optimum performance.
